Fractal weapons are frustrating to acquire and create situations where some players that have run hundreds of 30 or 40 dailies will still not receieve the skin they want, while someone who ran one 20 has the skin they want.

This is an idea to make weapons attainable while keeping them difficult to get while giving you the task of recreating a broken and shattered weapon into one you can use.

The Recipe
In the mystic forge, you should be able to combine 4 items to get the skin you want.

  • Weapon Handle Piece – this is an item you should be able to buy from the vendor for Fractal Relics at an expensive cost (2000). This is a universal piece used in all recipes.
  • Specific Weapon Piece – this piece determines what weapon comes out of the recipe and can be bought from the vendor for Pristine Fractal Relics for an expensive cost (20). Examples would be something like “Shortbow Arm Fragments” and “Sword Blade Fragments”.
  • Shards of Mists Essence – to ensure either 20+ rank or significant runs of <20. Use 3 or (5) shards. (Edit: Instead of Shards, Cores can drop at even higher levels and/or be created with manu shards)
  • Globs of Ectoplasm – (10) or 25 or 50

Reasoning
This provides a use for the enormous amount of relics people have accumulated while still keeping the cost very high, requiring many daily runs to complete. The use of shards gives players doing high levels an advantage over lower levels. The globs of ectoplasm are another itemsink for ectos, and adds some cost to the weapon.

With all of the cost in materials, this will lets very determined players get the weapons the want over a few weeks, or be rewarded for already have run hundreds of runs. Less determined players can still work towards this over the course of months.

Other Things That Would Make Us Hate RNG Less
Give salvage results to rings and untransmuted weapon skins.

  • Regular rings can salvage into 0-5 ectos and 1-2 Vials of Mists Essence.
  • Infused Rings can salvage into 0-5 ectos and 1-2 Globs of Mists Essence.
  • Untransmuted Weapon Skins can salvage into 0-5 ectos, 1-2 Shards of Mists Essence, and 1 Weapon Handle Piece.

These things aren’t farmable enough for good ecto farming. Even those with 50 rings won’t result in many ectos being created, likely less than 100 with how RNG works on salvaging. This also helps people get around some RNG by giving them an alternate way to get the mats they need, use unwanted rewards,, and again are not an effective farm that would result in a flood of materials.

(i guess you dont have to give us ectos either, but it would be nice and give unwanted rings greater value)

Even with all this, the difficulty of obtaining a weapon is retained while removing the frustrations that currently exist with the way it is handled right now.

Super Late Edit: As someone on reddit suggested, instead of shards, create Cores of Mist Essence, which can be created with 5 shards or dropped from levels 40+. This encourages doing higher level fractals instead of staying on 20.

On my first level 20 i got a fractal GS (that was six days after fotm was released). Since i have over 700 fractals and still never got the staff, sword, focus i want but got doubles hammer/harpoon gun that i don’t even use. Would be nice if i could trade them for other fractal weps of my choice.

This is by far the most brilliant idea ever.

You would actually feel like you are progressing towards something and not hope for a random drop that may or may not happen.

The current fractal weapon reward system is just bad. It doesn’t reward player equaly to his efort which also limits the purpose of doing higher level fractals.
I’m still hunting for my staff doing dailies regulary (got around 400 fractals, only one fractal dagger and tons of rings…). I’ll probably give up and return to FotM when (if?) similiar system is implemented.

Although I still haven’t been able to drop my desired fractal skins, I’m against the player being able to choose/craft his fractal weapon since most players would end up crafting the same GS/Staff/Daggers and it would lose the rarity of these skins.

Instead, I think a similar recipe could be made so a player could take his unwanted skins and forge another random one. Maybe something similar to this:

3-5 Shards ( or maybe keep the Core essence idea);
1 Fractal skin;
3-5 pristines; and
50-150 relics

This would result in a random fractal skin.

This mecanism would be a good way for players to use their Shards/Pristines (that most regular fractal runners have nothing to do with) and still keep it difficult to obtain your fractal skins, since not only do you have to manage to drop a fractal skin, but a continuous amount of Shards/Pristines in order to eventually get your desired skin.

(PS: It would be awesome of a dev could at least post saying that he is reading these threads, since I haven’t seen a dev respond to anything in a fractal related thread)

I would prefer that randomness not be added to this recipe. The randomness from drops is infuriating enough. After 3 months, I’d prefer and expensive recipe for a specific weapon instead of a cheap recipe for a random one.

The expensive cost would make up for the artificial gate imposed by the randomness you describe. This way, someone who has run fractals for months on end can be rewarded in the way they want, instead of possibly (again) never getting their skin.

But again that is an extreme, and considering that 48 rewards an average of 1 skin per party, and extra dice roll doesn’t hurt (but it does remain frustrating).

Excellent ideas, except for ectos. Please ANET, no more ectos for recipes, use another uselles crafting mats, like vile esscence, for new recipes.

And please fix drop from fotm. I have over 150 runs in lvl36+ and only 4 weapon skin, 2 axes, dagger and rifle…… oh, im guardian.

I never say that the actual systems is good. The actual system is horrible. But you solution isn´t good. You say “the same that actual fused weapons”. This ticket drops from BL Chest with a high low chance. You think that is a good system?

while this idea is better than what the system currently is now I still am a firm believer that 4 ascend rings into the forge should give you a random fractal weapon skin. Then pristine relics could actually be used for something again.

A ticket system would be better than the current, yes, since running 40+ generally has better skin drop rates.

But it still relies a bit on RNG, and does nothing to provide possible retroactive consideration to those who have already run for a long time. There are lots of shards and relics I have stockpiled. Same goes for many of the other runners of FotM.

Besides a higher drop chance at higher levels, it does not much else for rewarding the more skilled players better than those doing lower levels.

Still, it would not be a terrible system, and would probably be a welcome change.

I accept any solution except for one that included ectos, T6 mats, lodestones or more RNG.

Lodestones and RNG no, but I’m fine with T6 mats and ectos. I personally used ectos because it is a mainstay crafting componet, able to be obtained anywhere where a rare drops. Just playing the game should let you stockpile a few.

As long as the cost is not something obscene like 250. Ten ectos sound reasonable after you have already proved you can run a dungeon either many times or a few times at a very difficult level. Up to 50 is still not bad.

To be honest, ANY change to the way Fractal Weapons drop would be welcome. The system is terrible right now, and appears to be nothing more than a way to force people to buy gems for more Bank Slots, as we wrack up stacks and stacks of useless rings and weapons skins we don’t want or can’t use.

Ticket system is better than the actual just because the actual system is extremely bad. But still is a bad system (you can see the post about fused weapons, where many ppl complain about the horrible RNG of the chest, some ppl open over 200 chest and dont get anything) I´m sorry but i dont want another waste of money system.

You recipe is a great option. But ectos is a currency extremely used right now (500 for legen, 500 for backpack, 50 for accesory, 250 for crafted weapons in MF, etc) I think is better if we can used another crafting mat (maybe jewels, vile essences, vials, globs or shards, ori, wood, leather and many other uselles mats)

I had in mind higher drop chance since you need a couple of hours to get one daily chest. But I know it would still be RNG. That’s why OP had really neat idea. What we simply need is a way to utilize tons of Fractal/Pristine relics and shards we get from daily runs. Why not make it fair anet? Current system is so horrible ;(

I personally still feel that one or even 2 of the parts which you can get for Pristine Fractal Relics / Relics, should also be able to be got from breaking Fractal Weapons.

So for Example Maybe the recipe might need

2 x Fractal Metal Shard – (Can be brought for 1000 Fractal Relics each, OR Can be Salvaged from Fractal Weapons)
1 x Fractal Weapon Core (Purchased from vendor for 20 PFR, based on weapon you want)
3 x Core (Dropped at 40+ or made by Combining Shards)
25 x Crystaline Dust

For an Example.
