Hello All,

Since the launch of Heart of Thorns the Team has been monitoring feedback regarding the changes to Fractals. We’ve noticed several issues with fractal balance and rewards that are especially prominent above Fractal Level 50, and the team is working on some adjustments that we are planning to ship in December. We wanted to give you an overview of what’s coming.

Balance
After reviewing stat scaling we have decided to make an adjustment to how toughness scales. From fractal scale 1 to 50 the toughness stat of creatures will scale up with the fractal scale. Beyond fractal scale 50 the toughness stat of creatures will no longer increase with the scale of the fractal. This is to make damage builds more viable in higher level fractals.

Ascended Drop Rates
We’ve noticed some changes to ascended drop rates that are below what we were expecting. In this iteration of Fractal changes we will be increasing the drop rate of ascended gear from your Fractal dailies with an emphasis on high level Fractals rewarding more ascended armor.

Mastery Experience
We plan for Fractals to be an effective place to earn mastery experience. Our first step towards that goal is adding additional experience sources to boss chests at the end of each Fractal. This experience counts towards earning your Masteries for Central Tyria, and increases both for more difficult Fractals as well as with increased Fractal Scale.

Gold
In this iteration, there will be several changes to how fractals give out liquid rewards (gold and items designed to convert directly into gold). The negative aspect of this change is a required decrease to the amount of keys you receive from converting a stabilizing matrix from two to one. However the upside is threefold:

  • First, the quantity of free Fractal Encryption Keys you receive for completing all dailies will increase.
  • Second, the amount of liquid rewards Fractal Encryptions contain will be greatly increased.
  • Last, the variation of liquid rewards will be reduced. We noticed that the general perception of how much the Encryptions were rewarding players and the aggregate numbers didn’t agree, they weren’t even close. We believe that the variation was set to rely too greatly on the high valued rewards. This change will make liquid rewards from fractal farming and dailies much more predictable.

We look forward to getting these changes to you and would like to thank you for all of your constructive feedback on Fractals. We are committed to supporting fractals for the long term and we’ll be continuously monitoring them for future improvements.

This looks like a very good compromise between the demands of the players and the changes y’all already made to Fractals. Anet, thank you for considering the feedback you received but also not just throwing your hands up in the air and saying ‘kitten it’!

I’ll be interested to see the numbers after the updates, is there a timeline for when these changes will be implemented?

Regarding the Stabilizing Matrix change (1 key instead of 2,) is salvaging an Ascended ring still going to be an efficient way of acquiring extra Matrices to buy keys with? I’m concerned that it will be a net loss with the high (and excessive, imo) 1g cost of an Ascended Salvage kit.

Just use fractal relics to buy the keys, they are inexpensive and have been worth it so far (especially so with the liquid rewards getting a boost)

I’m aware that I can buy keys outright. In the current system, salvaging rings is more efficient (on average) than that, and I’m wondering if that will still be true in the new system.

I doubt it, I think buying the keys outright is looking like it will be more efficient.

Probably not. They have their hands full with the first 3 raid wings, and I’d rather that Anet take a little longer to make these fixes than do it in a slapdash manner. Actually, this will be a good time period to save up encryption boxes and spend stabilizing matrixes on keys while they still give 2

Please add an additional daily for the levels 80-100, or it still will not be worth doing the high levels. Also, please fix at least 2 fractals for every daily (changing every day), to prevent players from just farming the fast fractals over and over again (it’s already happening).

Thanks for the update.

Any plans on changing the mistlocks so they aren’t just copy pasted instabilities for 10 levels in a row. Currently we have improper difficulty based on the instability (ex. lvl 56 is Swamp (Bloomhunger) with explosive mobs, which means the instability is essentially ignored because there aren’t really any mobs there anyway), and instabilities that are just poorly designed (lose boons on dodge, enemies steal boons on hit). Wasn’t the purpose of single fractal islands to make it so the instabilities actually mattered and were tailored to the island?

Also any news on when Ad Infinitum will actually be obtainable?

Honest question expecting an answer: Wasn’t your first intention to make fractals above 50 an actual challenging content? I mean, what’s the point of having an additional 50 levels where difficulty does not scale up?

All you did with HoT was to increase armor and HP of bosses in order to make things “more challenging”. Plan failed greatly because all the change accomplished, was to make things more boring and not more challenging at all. You admit that it was a mistake, by removing the insane toughness scale above 50, but what about your actual first intention? Challenging content

Did you just go back to your word and said “to heck with it, zerker meta is not going anywhere”?

If there are no other balance changes other than the ones you mentioned, the game will still be the same spam #1 and go to loot. No new mechanics, no new anything, no sight of challenging content.

Anyways, read it or ignore it, I just had to ask.

We’ve noticed some changes to ascended drop rates that are below what we were expecting.

See, this is what I don’t get about your development team. Why are ascended drop rates below what the developers (you!) expected? You developed the content, you programmed the rates, why would they be different than what you put in or anything other than what you 100% intended? Did someone on their own simply have complete control over fractal rates with no oversight? This design concept seems to run rampant among your developers and is most apparent when reviewing material storage, boxes that open into more boxes, zone-specific keys, etc. (it seems like your internal teams do not communicate changes well with each other, which is a poor reflection on management).

Well, let’s hope this change just restores ascended drops to what they were before.

I’d also like to point out that it is extremely disappointing that there’s no changes to salvaging, which I must say was one of the main features I was looking forward to with this coming expansion; now it’s one of the biggest letdowns I’ve experienced in any game. So glad I saved my 60-some-odd rings for years just to have them continue to sit there.

Finding it more and more difficult to login at all & this hardly entices me otherwise. Here’s to continued unrewarding play.

IMO a better system would be having a recommended daily for each 10 scales (1-10, 11-20, 21-30, 31-40, 41-50, 51-60, 61-70, 71-80, 81-90, 91-100). This would mean no picking the easiest fractals, and more chances for rewards (which would have to not completely suck of course). Also would mean getting your daily reward after only 1 fractal instead of 3, so if you have little time you can still be rewarded.

The scaling will still apply, just in 1-50 range. It should not be that severe though, quadratic scaling of toughness AND hp is quite brutal currently.

But the issue of bosses hitting like a wet noodle, lack of interesting instabilities, constant farming of specific fractals and bugs still in fractals (which were reported as being fixed) haven’t been addressed yet. Its nice that some of these issues are being fixed but we should probably keep pushing to get these other issues fixed as well while fractals are being given attention.

Yes, 50% of 0% is still 0%. They said you get better loot at higher Frak. We do 3-4 times more Frak than before. 3 lvl progress and all dailys. This is a brazen. We make more loss than earnings. I am more than dissapointed.

Since we’re at it, are there any plans to rework the damage dealt by enemies (or rather bosses) in high scale bosses or do you (the devs) feel that the damage is fine in combination with the instabilities we currently have? Damage dealt by bosses feels very low to me on high scales.

they could change the dailies this way that u have to make one lvl in 1-10, one in 11-20 and one from 21-30 that would be one daily. for higher lvls same way to go

and about the dmg..i wanna be oneshot as an ele on 50+ by bossattacks like the hammerjump of the archdiviner..tbh this is a joke that u can facetank this stuff as an ele, its easier than before but just takes more time to kill the bosses in most cases

and i would appreciate it if you would nerf/fix the fractal farm, like the 40 molten duo farm..jumping down, getting ported onto the platform being downed, rezz back up and port the team with you..the price of infusions hit rock bottom

Great changes for a start, however nothing was mentioned about instability’s and enemy’s doing more damage. I personally hope to see enemy’s doing equally as much damage or more as the old scale 50 pre-HoT at around scale 75-100. Also i do hope to see those promised fine tuned instability s for each scale some day and less copy and paste boon fumbler for like 30+ scales.

Could you ask the team if there is any plans for come kind of +7 conversion for those of us with infusions that are +5 Stat with +5 AR?

I personally haven’t done any new fractals because I feel my gear was made obsolete with the update and many of us spent to much gold on them way back when they were released to just not use them.

FYI currently people only run swamps and molten duos to get their dailies done (56-67-77 or something like that) and there is absolutely no incentive to run anything else. I have only done lvl 100 Mai Trin once – and there is absolutely no point to run it again.

Please increase the fractal tonic drop rate or give us an option to buy it from the vendor for pristine fractal relics. Since HoT has released with the new fractal rewards I haven’t seen anyone gloat about getting the tonic, or updated the wiki with it as a reward from any of the new fractal daily chests, so I doubt its dropping at all or the rate is so abysmal that I have a better chance at winning the lottery than getting this tonic.

I don’t see how changes listed by Gaile gonna promote playerbase to run anything but swamp/duo/maw. Even if you add 75-100 daily, people will run 77-80-90 and will be done with it. We need a daily “Do lvl 94 fractal” to get it to work.

You get reward only from daily, but there is only one daily for 50+, do 3 fractals lvl50+, so you can do 51,52,53 and you will get same reward as doing 98,99,100

Are there any plans to change FRACTAL DAILIES?

FYI currently people only run swamps and molten duos to get their dailies done (56-67-77 or something like that) and there is absolutely no incentive to run anything else. I have only done lvl 100 Mai Trin once – and there is absolutely no point to run it again.

If those changes go through and the rewards are appropriate, this issue should fix itself as other scales will be more fun to play and are going to give more rewards than the 56-60-67 dailies we’re doing currently. If people just want their daily rewards, they’re still going to do those of course, but people will continue to run the easiest scales until you lock them into certain ones.

I don’t see how changes listed by Gaile gonna promote playerbase to run anything but swamp/duo/maw. Even if you add 75-100 daily, people will run 77-80-90 and will be done with it. We need a daily “Do lvl 94 fractal” to get it to work.

Higher scales won’t take close to as long as they do now
Higher scales drop more loot/encryptions
Encryptions will have a higher price on the TP (they already jumped up from 10s to 30s again as we’re talking)
And most importantly, higher scales will be more fun overall again

I agree with you that there’s going to be people who will take the easy route, but I’m already getting bored with that and so are others; I for my part will run other scales and get some more loot while I’m at it. At that point it will be an issue of “I just want to be done asap” instead of “this is the only way I’m not going to die of boredom while doing my high-scale dailies”

After reviewing stat scaling we have decided to make an adjustment to how toughness scales. From fractal scale 1 to 50 the toughness stat of creatures will scale up with the fractal scale. Beyond fractal scale 50 the toughness stat of creatures will no longer increase with the scale of the fractal. This is to make damage builds more viable in higher level fractals.

Honest question expecting an answer: Wasn’t your first intention to make fractals above 50 an actual challenging content? I mean, what’s the point of having an additional 50 levels where difficulty does not scale up?

All you did with HoT was to increase armor and HP of bosses in order to make things “more challenging”. Plan failed greatly because all the change accomplished, was to make things more boring and not more challenging at all. You admit that it was a mistake, by removing the insane toughness scale above 50, but what about your actual first intention? Challenging content

Did you just go back to your word and said “to heck with it, zerker meta is not going anywhere”?

If there are no other balance changes other than the ones you mentioned, the game will still be the same spam #1 and go to loot. No new mechanics, no new anything, no sight of challenging content.

Anyways, read it or ignore it, I just had to ask.

The zerker meta never changed, it’s always been and always will be that way

and pls fix the collection..had the collections completed twice before hot and my collection says 7/19..and a guildy has 19/19 in the collection but didnt get the weapon crate Q_Q

If you nerf their toughness, please increase their power scaling. When I did Mai Trin on lvl 100 it felt like she was doing less damage than on the old lvl 50. On lvl 100 she should one hit low health classes!
