The removal of culling from WvW is great. So I like this patch.

I never used any form of quickness so I can’t miss it, but I might give the greatsword a try now.

I still hope to see some longbow buffs because it’s still my favorite weapon because of 1500+ range and Barrage AoE. These changes would make me happy:
- Long Range shot(1) attack speed increased and projectile speed increased some more.
- Rapid Fire(2) can be stopped by using other skills.
- Point Blank Shot(4) range increased to 1200 (1500 traited). Causes a knockdown instead of knockback beyond the current max range.

People its fine , its a low level trait . Rangers still get it super easy , and both you and your pet benefit from it . If you enjoy playing the ranger , keep playing . If not , play something else . I have played games online long enough to know to not expect good changes in patches . Developers are usually clueless , and will not listen to the community .

How long do you think it takes a pet to run from the ranger to their target or even start attacking? Unless you are in melee range, have a ranged pet (and are for some reason in 900 range because god forbid pets have the same range as rangers) or you activate a handful of pets skills that are useful away from the target (moa bird’s fury, melandru’s stalker’s might) the quickness buff to your pet is useless. Even if you are in melee range there is a good chance the pet AI and targeting will waste the quickness.

It may have been a low level trait, but even with its full power, ranger’s weren’t outperforming the competition. So without it, where do you think they are?

Its great till you realize that it and other features added have resulted in just giant blob zergs running around, of which we can’t use half our damage in it because of how awful they are in zerg fights.

we end up basically needing to use Longbow for any decent AOE….

If you honestly want to farm though, simply do a Thief..equip shortbow, and shoot the poison field everywhere….Farm points all day long..

It may have helped in PvP. It hurt in PvE.

The days of F4 godly fast takedowns are over.

Nah, quickness still makes it faster then your average bear. It still throws people off. You’re just mortal now.

If you’re a ranger, you still have access to it more then anyone else and the speed takedown is still the sweetest of takedowns.

Also you get it for a second longer, and a new stunbreaker. Add a second or two to the pet swap version and that’ll just be cherry.

I can accept this. I just wish since it’s not so bursty anymore, that we can get more time in it. That extra second is nice. Helps in the non-combat situation (speed-rezzing).

Maybe another or three? Pleeeeaaaase?

I’m using Signet of the Beastmaster so I use SotH (for the all important movespeed), SoS(my panic button), and SoR(mostly for the stun breaker). I only used petswap for quickness there. I’m not really phased by the quickness nerf. In fact, I’m quite happy that QZ is now a stun breaker coz now I can replace SoR with it

I wouldn’t replace it that quickly, you cannot heal when you use QZ so you’ll probably just die anyway. If you run SoS it makes more sense to blow that instead.

You’ve missed out the point of having the LB if you ran it without QZ btw.

GS got a massive buff – great
QZ got a slight nerf, but it seems Anet screwd up again, since speed stomping in WvW seems just as fast…. prolly shouldnt have said that they didnt nerf it properly…

anyway, felines just got massively OP with BM build, in addition to theifs and mesmers taking a massive hit in WvW (no more perma invis/culling)

overall, positive patch. Not spectacular, but okay.

And the long list of class issues gets pushed back another 30 days and we get to sit though another month of the satus quo.

Not unexpected, but okay.

unfortunately pet is still BUGGED with healing today happen several times, sometimes 2 in 1 downed state that pet didnt healed me, just stood over me and looked lake bag of sadnes .. well fix it again and now properly please

What I would like is no change to the time on Quickening Zephyr (keep it 5s), a moderate reduction on the cooldown (About 2/3 of what it is at the moment), so you could have it up more often, and maybe a change to 50% healing debuff (which could stack with Poison for 25%).

This would remove the Spike of the original (As we know too much Spike is a bad thing), cut off a bit of the downside, and allow us to be a bit more reactive in it’s use, as it’s not on Cooldown as often. I love being able to use it when I get round the back of mobs with my Ranger for the bleed stacks.

It’s an across the board nerf to quickness, sure, but it’s also a huge loss to our overall dps, regardless if you run a burst or condition based build because of the need for Rangers to rely on the increased activation time to keep up with other classes. It’s a huge loss to our overall capability to revive downed allies in tough spots – many times in the past I could gamble and get my party members up with a well-timed pet swap, and now this has certainly made it difficult and require a higher skill cap to time effectively.

Too little, too late. Would’ve saved us all a headache if it wasn’t changed between beta weekends and launch.

Not a buff, but a fix masquerading as one.

Still doesn’t work properly in all situations. Can’t give specific details about the failures of it, but Brown Bears don’t work all the time. Bad news bears, I guess.

Overall, well, you ever hear about when they would bury a person in a cemetery, some cases they would leave a bell attached to a string inside the coffin, so in the even of a person accidentally being buried alive they could ring in the hopes of some person hearing it?

I think it’s time we stopped trying and accepted the fact no one is coming to rescue us. I do enjoy playing a Ranger, but I certainly don’t feel encouraged to play one after these patch notes.

So you’re saying there’s only one way of playing LB? Could’ve fooled me!

In WvW, survival is more important than bursting someone down. If I needed Quickness, I had it available to me every 15 seconds. Why would I waste a utility slot just for that?

Typically you shouldn’t use QZ when the pressure is on you, though sometimes it might help you.

Now that it’s a stun breaker, I can imagine there are some scenarios in a fight where you might have more health then your foe where you end up royally fooing up someones combo on you and end up out DPSing them.

Break stun, concussion/pbs, poison volley/qs, rapid fire, barrage.

Depending on your build and, maybe if you have the bows on switch so you can do all of the above, that’s over 2-3K burst in a couple of seconds while maintaining a consistent damage thereafter.

You’re right though. It’s probably way overkill to have QZ for 7-10 secs for you and the pet. A guy can dream though.

Maybe instead of completely negating healing now with the change, make it 10 secs of quickness and heals 50% less effective while in QZ?

Still probably OP though. You get the cut of my jib at any rate.

I don’t think that’s likely. The four classes who get QZ-type skills get virtually identical skills. The only difference is the type of drawback (warriors take double-damage, thieves lose endurance, rangers can’t heal, engineers get a random one).

But AFAIK (my warrior and thief are low level, and I don’t have an engineer), ranger is the only one who have a trait to reduce the cooldown on the skill from 60 sec to 48 sec. So we’re already ahead of the other classes in terms of how often we can use the skill.

I should give praise about the HoM pet vitality value fixes. I’ve been begging for that one for a long time, thank you to the people who pushed that one through. I seriously thought we were never see that happen (like the FDS being added to the PvP tab as well). With the nerf to pet skills on swap I might stow my wolf for good and bring my black widow.

Good read!

Though I still appreciate that extra second they gave us, your idea to just lower the cool down is probably a whole lot better (and more reasonable lol) then 7-10 secs of 50% heal QZ.

It stays pretty much the same, but it’s made up for in that cool down. 40 secs base is perfect. I could live with 45. 50 is blah.

I also hope they’ll buff BM’s Zephyr’s Speed by a second or two to account for the quickness nerf.

LOL ya I ran into a clown with his feline last night in WvW plucking away with the shortbow. I hammered him into the dirt and the pet never touched me because all I had to do was keep moving while it stopped to attack.

Haha, yeah, I didn’t really have room for it in my utility bar. I was using Protect Me, Signet of Renewal and Signet of the hunt. I needed all of those to run past zergs into towers. I think I may have missed out… but I was doing alright without it.

I could/should have used pet swap quickness probably, but I’m rarely close enough to stomp anything. And I was using 30-25-15-0-0, so I didn’t really want to give up piercing arrows, 10% damage while flanking, or the protection on dodge for it.

Just wondering, what is used in dungeons, beside the all-might shortbow? I usually take one type of sword. GS for tanking/defense or S/T for damage. The defense is quite good in high level fractals especially dredge.

Rangers, you were meant to kill trash mobs only, is what this patch says, loud and clear.

Yes, a melee weapon is the way to go when you are one a squishy class, NOT.
The gimick evasion and defense bits tacked on to a few GS ranger skills only work against single trash mobs. Forget about trying to melee the groups of trash mobs you encounter in dungeons. Evasion both for ranger skills and pet skills does not work/scale against anything greater than a trash mob.

First we got a massive GW nerf, now they give back a very minor amount of damage. It just shows a conscious effort to keep the class at the end of the line. Max damage, oh thats for Ele’s and Warriors and even Guardians.

The Zepher/ShortBow attack was about the only Ranger alpha that was of any significant use against anything greater than a trash mob and that has been sent to the trash bin.

This patch should have been named the Ranger RIP-off. (rest in peace).

Are pets, the defining and mandatory part of the class EVER going to get fixed?

Fixed you say in wonderment, why there is nothing wrong with pets, they are working as intended say the spokespersons.

Simple are pets broken test: Engage a boss, summon a ranged pet, watch ranged pet start to use ranged attacks at a somewhat safe distance from the melee boss, then watch as the same pet’s broken AI decides it is a better idea to run directly up to the boss and try to face tank it (and quickly die.) Or a more positive test: post a video of any pet, providing any meaningful contribution to a boss or champion encounter that will convince other classes rangers are desirable in dungeons.

Rangers have nothing as a class to contribute to group play.

I’m glad for the engineer buffs. They were long overdue.

As for the ranger:

I don’t enjoy melee combat (that’s why I picked the ranger class) so the Gs buffs (albeit welcome) did nothing for me.

Some of the bug fixes, the white raven and black widow in particular, only reminded me of how long even the simplest ranger bugs linger in the game until they receive proper attention.

I used to enjoy quickness since it complemented both condition damage and regular damage builds pretty well and most importantly was pretty fun to use but I guess it wasn’t meant to be.

I was looking for an excuse to log back into the game and I actually ended up losing one.

98% of ranger builds had 5 points in beastmastery.

No, I won’t say 98% of Warriors used haste since I am not prone to hyperbole.

Good point though about 5 points in BM. Still, those build don’t “rely” on 2 seconds of haste every 15 ? seconds traited. Warriors totally relied on frenzy in their builds. Bull Rush>frenzy>HB or whatever other combo they used. Warriors…and Thieves, have always been more reliant on burst.

In WvW, survival is more important than bursting someone down. If I needed Quickness, I had it available to me every 15 seconds. Why would I waste a utility slot just for that?

I’ve never ever seen someone tank a zerg. You think an extra 5k HP or a utility will save you against 10 people focus firing you?

And no, pet swap QZ is not the same. Before the nerf, you could use the whole channel of rapid fire and barrage on one cast of QZ. That’s night and day compared with 2 seconds worth of it.

I do appreciate his candor in discussing some topics of Rangers with us, but unfortunately his only contribution to this thread was reminding us that AR is actually applied, even if the tool tip doesn’t show it. As it currently stands, the folks at Anet that are responsible for profession balance neglect the Ranger. I’m not saying we need to be buffed into some sort of amazing, game-breaking profession, but I would appreciate the ability to compete with other players in the game without being pigeon-holed into cookie-cutter builds.

As it exists right now, Rangers are very poor utility classes. It doesn’t mean we can’t provide something for the party, but it always feels like the lesser of available options. Now this is mostly my opinion, but I’ll do my best to support it with facts.

Spirt of Frost vs Banner of Discipline

On paper, an across the board 10% increase to base damage sounds great. If it could be maintained and proc effectively, well then it would be a must-have on any Ranger build. Unfortunately, it has a health bar, is either stationary or follows the Ranger directly and requires very careful movement to make it effective, and at best, can only trigger 50% of the time.

The banner has no health, a smaller area of effect weighed against greater benefit throughout its duration (170 precision, 15% critical damage) and can be moved at will. It also belongs to a profession that needs no investment into the traits to increase the effectiveness of the skill. It is also on a profession that can produce incredible amounts of burst damage.

Now, mathematically, on paper Frost beats Banner. But because spirits have health, Banner will always outlast Frost, does not have an internal cool down of 10 seconds (I’ve heard it’s bugged and doesn’t have the ICD, but cannot confirm nor deny). And while Banner’s effect only affects players for 95 seconds of its 120 second cool down, it will proc off of every critical hit. It also increases its own effectiveness by adding in an extra 8%~ critical chance, giving it anywhere from 5%-8% overall damage increase (if you’re under fury, which all warrior are.)

Now this is just one example, there a more (mostly with the spirits because, hey, they’re lackluster at best and terrible at their worst.)

Robert designs dungeons. Fractals is a dungeon. The AR for pets is probably his baby that he helped push through. Probably something like “Hey I’m trying to do more things with agony damage in my dungeons, but I can’t because it really screws up rangers because you guys on the class balance team won’t give their pets AR.” Of course he’s going to mention it.

The other stuff is probably out of his control, aside from making a suggestion at a company meeting. No reason to blame him for it.

Robert Hrouda is the dungeon/fractal dev, so he’s probably busy reading posts on that forum and maybe tackling some new issues in that part of the game.

The agony resistance was really needed for fractals, so it’s a great update in that respect. Robert probably made it happen since his involvement in the Ranger forums. Which is great and we should all understand how valuable Robert is to us. Be sure to not even think anything negative about him, because it’s not in his power to balance skills. Also the fix to pet reviving must have been thanks to Robert’s involvement. Although I hear it’s not been fixed properly yet unfortunately.

Too bad the good parts of the update were quickly overshadowed by the nerfs Rangers received. It affected a lot of Rangers directly it seems. My build didn’t get buffed nor nerfed, so I’m not angry about the patch. My survivability must have increased by the nerf to quickness, so I should maybe be happy about it.

I liked the removal of culling from WvW and the ability to force use of light-weight player models, which made WvW so much more playable to me.

Seriously. I’m down with running an underdog profession (if not the underdog profession), even putting in double the effort to make it rock, but to get kicked down pretty much every patch is just demoralizing. The last one (the nerf to Empathic Bond in particular) I felt I could still work around, i.e. with SoR and/or HS. But this? There’s no working around this. This is a straight-up build-destroying change that shouldn’t happen this far in, especially after some of us have invested countless hours to acquire the gear necessary to optimize our builds, Ranger or otherwise.

The removal of culling from WvW is great. So I like this patch.

I never used any form of quickness so I can’t miss it, but I might give the greatsword a try now.

I still hope to see some longbow buffs because it’s still my favorite weapon because of 1500+ range and Barrage AoE. These changes would make me happy:
- Long Range shot(1) attack speed increased and projectile speed increased some more.
- Rapid Fire(2) can be stopped by using other skills.
- Point Blank Shot(4) range increased to 1200 (1500 traited). Causes a knockdown instead of knockback beyond the current max range.
- Barrage(5) cooldown decreased by 10 seconds.

How could LB be your favorite weapon if you’ve never used QZ with it?

QZ was nice, but in WvW, it really has no place in my utility bar. I’m using Signet of the Beastmaster so I use SotH (for the all important movespeed), SoS(my panic button), and SoR(mostly for the stun breaker). I only used petswap for quickness there. I’m not really phased by the quickness nerf. In fact, I’m quite happy that QZ is now a stun breaker coz now I can replace SoR with it

I mind my own positioning more than the damage I do, because as a squishy ranger that will die in 2 seconds when focused by 10 people, I should always be in the back lines (survival!) providing support fire.

You’ll die in 2 seconds when you get focused fire which is why it’s a waste of time to zerg surf with the LB using anything but a pure GC build. If they get to me, it means they’ve cut right through my team already. At that point, if swoop + LR doesn’t get me out, nothing else in our utilities will. So it makes more sense to try to kill asap which is why QZ is needed on the LB. Switching pets constantly to get QZ also lowers your DPS with less buffs and/or less attacking from the pet. That kind of pet swap QZ works a lot better on the SB since you don’t have a range penalty and can afford to circle strafe your target up close where your pet could actually get to it after the swap.

I’m still here and lurking about (as is the balance team), gathering information to bring to meetings. For the first couple days after a patch, people are still figuring things out and getting used to changes. We didn’t kill rangers (I was doing some PvP last night, and have done a couple dungeon runs). It’s just that there’s a predictable reaction to when we change something, that we have killed classes and destroyed builds, and there’s nothing I can say or do to help in those situations. Sometimes you have to sit back and let the community sort themselves out… people depend on something (quickness) and then when that gets changed, there’s an initial period of confusion, but its always followed by “look what I can do” because people are being forced to try new things, and they do a bit of experimenting they may have not have done before.
Sure things need more attention. LB, pets, spirits.. they all need some love on our part, and they will get it. I may not be the best PvP’r out there, but I was first/second place on my team in the three games I played as a ranger (deer rank!), and I was still effective against other classes. the new quickness speed will take some getting used to, but it by no means destroyed rangers.

But me going into every thread about someone claiming bad things and giving expressions isn’t going to help (there are also a lot of those threads that I just wouldn’t be able to keep track of due to time constraints). So I sit back, watch, take notes for meetings, and try to find a good time to post to help guide the conversation.
