I feel like the commander tag is far from its full potential, just thought id post a few suggestions for improvement.

1. Commander Utility skills/Elite skill – This would make playing as a commander a much more defined role, If commanders gain access to an support skills for a larger group of people than a typical boon/heal skill. Possibly being able to place an AoE ring that buffs squad members inside it. It would make it easier to highlight exactly where to defend and rewards players for being in squads and following orders.

2. Map markers for squad members. Being able to place multiple waypoints on the map for squads to follow again makes for much more strategic gameplay.

3. A secondary role costing gold or Commanders can grant the icon to a single player for a set time(General? Corporal? Captain?) Seeing as WvW is essentially a war having more visible ranks allows servers to strategies and divide the army into different roles. Say commanders lead the major forces while their assistant take on tasks assigned to them. This also means that instead of two people running a commander tag to divide their forces they can split up into rank of command.

I believe that many of the things you suggested have been mentioned many, many times on these forums. They have known since BW1 that we’re not satisfied with the grouping systems in GW2, but doesn’t appear to be a priority at this time.

Whatever system or changes they come up with need to be flexible to meet ALL players and guilds play styles. We need to be able to form forces for public or closed private/guild functions. Hopefully when they get around to making changes, it’s changes the PLAYERS actually want.

I agree.

I find it hard to imagine that fixing the group UI in WvW to work like the group UI in PvE takes more resources than a living story release.

I find it hard to imagine that upgrading the C&S system with decent tools and allowing public/private squads takes more resources than the content for a living story release.

Obviously Anet is not as frustrated or does not feel as strongly about the abysmal grouping systems in GW2. It would not have gone on this long if they did.

If you give commanders special abilities people will take it and keep their tag on just to min/max their characters. You would see a dozen or more commanders all running together for the group buffs and whatnot.

The system could definitely be improved but that’s not the way to do it, in my opinion.

number 3 sounds redundant at first (just get another squad!) but then you think of the benefits of a single guild being aware of where all the commanders are while being part of a squad, and it’s pretty obvious how it would help.

I’m curious Devon if you’ve considered having a private/guild ability to the C&S system so players and guilds can form forces with some control over numbers to avoid orange swords as well as allow for specialty forces and guild events.

I’ve seen in mentioned about making more tools for commanders and more functionality, but nothing about allowing guild/private squads?

This is the type of upgrade to the system we will likely be making, but it is not a short-term project. We feel commanders aren’t getting enough mileage out of the system as it is now and we’d like to make it much, much more robust.

Whatever the reason, as it stands, the ‘commander’ is simply a mobile map-marker that gives a rallying point for the players.
The party/ squad system is largely ignored by players who for the most part are simply unaware of it. The player-commander thus has no extra tools for communication, no ability to set objectives no options for discipline. He can’t even offer any reward if you join his party.

Imagine (say) Wellington or Napoleon simply having a big blue hat on his head, no lieutenants, no NCOs, no sergeants, not even a horse, just the hat.
Worse, a hat you can buy in the local market for seventeen times less than the cost of a fancy sword.

Anything, absolutely anything would be an improvement. A commander chat channel, squads with sub squads, different markers for multiple commanders. All of these things are a obvious, simple additions that would at least help. I can think of a dozen more off the top of my head, anyone could.

We’ve been begging for something for months. It doesn’t matter if it isn’t perfect first time out of the gate. Anything, anything, anything is better than nothing.

I don’t have a commander tag, mostly because my guild has dozens and dozens, and I don’t have the money. But I’ve been around WvW for a long time and know the in’s and out’s of what the tag does.

I don’t think commanders should have abilities that reward players for being near them, IE bonus healing, boons. But I do like the idea of them being able to place markers, both waypoints on the map and physical, that show what the commander is trying to accomplish, ie where to attack or defend. They would of course have to only be visible to one server.

As for communication, I don’t know if all servers have their own unofficial teamspeak or ventrillo, ( or similar) WvW channels, but most do. Nearly all prime time successful map conquests occur because several commanders are linked by voice chat not only with their followers, but also a side voice chat the other commanders. Sure some commanders don’t use these systems, but the majority of them do. A chat channel in game only for commanders, IMO, would just be another tab or chat color that they would have to check, being both redundant and distracting.

Voice chat is far superior to type chat, and since GW2 doesn’t support native voice chat, it seems very unlikely that commanders will ever have voice chat provided in-game. I would love in game voice chat, but I don’t think it’s in the plan.

Different colors of commander tags would be useful. Colors of tags could be assigned randomly as a commander tags up. To avoid the background map affecting visibility of the tag, I think the tags should have a small boarder around the tag that never changes color.
This may also promote commanders spamming their tag on and off to get their favorite color, but that might be solved in a different way, maybe by limiting the number of times you can tag up in a period of time. Say no more then 3 re-tags inside of a minute.

I think commanders being able to delegate temporary, map visible “officers” would be an abuse of the system. If you want to be visible on the map, spend the 100G, ( no alternative, like badges or recipes). Maybe, and that’s a strong maybe, commanders can select one person to have a small icon, of some shape, above their head that is only visible within sight, so the mini map and large map don’t get crowded with icons. But still allows commanders to split their forces. While this is similar to targeting, it allows more flexibility during battle when you can’t always select the “team leader”.

Also I don’t think commanders should be able to move anyone or discipline them, again, abuse of the system.

Just gonna mention Number 2 exists already. You have to open your map and shift-click (or alt click, its one of those) and you can place 4 distinct markers on the map that your squad can see. I’ve gotten most use out of them in the Proxemics lab guild puzzle.

Honestly my only real wish for the commander tag system would be “guilds tags.” As it stands, we have several groups on a map at any given time, and they run tagless. Something other than the “get in a party and target the commander” meta would be sweet.

The draw back to this is their is not a lot of time left for the players you do have, at least those I have talked to. Many have already left, more are leaving as their beta invites come through and others are simply waiting for other games like eos to come out and are doing other things in the meantime.

Honestly, I think Waypoint upgrades should be replaced with research into one of the Orders. Priory research, for example, could give a single commander while defending a keep or SM the ability to transform into the Balthazar avatar from the personal story, Vigil might be some sort of super weapon, and Whispers might be.. Well, you get the idea.

I feel the big problem is to get pugs into your squad. A possible fix to this could be a lfg system (are we getting this?) and maybe have a wvwvw tab showing all the commanders who are taged up at the moment and in which borderland they are in. Maybe have the lfg listing pop up to the wvwvw tab apon entering a borderland.

To be honest commander abilities would be pretty abusable, for example; if a trait was introduced where the commander had a much higher health pool this would be abused by low hp classes or in GvGs.

Hopefully they have more sense then to worry about gvg and what negative affect something may have on the people who are taking spots up in wvw and not working to help their server. Last time I looked their were private arenas.

The best grouping system I’ve ever used to organize multiple groups for large scale PvP was the “Warband” system used in Warhammer Online. I’m not saying they need to copy it, but they need to have a flexible system with lots of functionality like the Warband system had.

Public, Private or guild only… whatever players needed it for. You could make assistents to invite, manage groups and take pressure of the leader/commander so they could just lead. This is what is needed in GW2.

I just want commanders to be able to have a 20 man party capability (raid). The lack of interface for a “Squad” is making me.

Other than that I don’t think commanders should get special skills. That is by far not good for the game because it means 100g will get you special WvWvW skills. Lets try to improve the commanders ability in logistics and organization.

I just want to be able to run with multiple guild groups using a C&S type system and not have an additional 40 people join us and then complain because we’re not “leading” the zone right.

It’s pretty much impossible to run a havoc/ambush force under 25 people with a commander pin up. We have one system in the game to group over 5 people and many guilds won’t use it because it’s a headache. They need a way to form a private/guild squad.

Anet – as far as maximum WvW benefit with minimum effort, a commander system upgrade is hands down what you should be looking at. Let me suggest some fresh ideas to hopefully spark renewed interest in the subject:

1. Let people buy colors for their tag with badges (similar to buying dye for your armor).

2. Sell a “General” tag for 50g.
—> A plain white circle icon with a black G that is visible on map within 2000 distance.
—> Only visible in WvW.
—> General tag has no squad functionality, but can use /supplyinfo
—> If General joins a commander’s squad, his General tag becomes same color as commander’s. Commander has an option to disable generals in his squad if he wishes.
Just think of the strategic coordination options if a commander has an appointed general!!!

3. Everyone with a commander tag or who purchases one gets two 1-time consumables. If you use this consumable while in a squad, 1 “vote” goes to the squad commander (cannot use it for yourself). As commanders accumulate more votes they can get cooler icons, fancier titles, etc. I imagine someone eventually reaching 100 votes (5,000 gold worth of commander tags) and becoming the first Legendary Commander with a really awesome icon!!

The amount of resources to make this happen pales in comparison to creating a whole new map and mechanic system, yet the benefits are great, universal and risk-free.

Any chance we can move this up on the priority list since we’ve been asking for something since launch?

We’ve been using a broken group UI in WvW for 13 months. If we still can even form a 5 person group properly, I don’t expect changes to C&S anytime soon.

No to number one. Zergs are already buffed enough by guard stacks, orb bonuses, and the general lack of any downside to bringing far more numbers than needed in this game. Also, it would make roamers start running tags, which nobody wants.

I hope you’re really thinking this one through. If you add abilities to the commander tag you’re going to have everyone and their mother running around with a tag on, even if they are not leading.

If you put a cap on how many commanders are allowed on the map, who gets to use theirs then? Just like it was stated about the outnumbered buff, you wouldn’t want people harassed to turn their tag off, so someone else could turn theirs on.

Been suggested since BW1.

- Top 5 or 10 commanders on a map are shown by biggest squad numbers. People tend to follow decent commanders, not idiots. Now you have incentive to join squads for established commanders.

- Also need private squads so guilds or anyone in private squads can form forces without attracting a zerg. There will always be public commander pins up, but we need a way to form guild or havoc forces properly.

Technically a small % of people did ask for the orb buff, and anet confirmed they would be adding it back months ago, but we didnt have a time frame. But again, They listened to the minority>Majority of players there. Even in democracy where the minority can be heard, they will never win, because they are the minority and not the majority. Why is it so lopsided here, where they ask us what we want, then do the opposite?

Back on topic though, I completely support and want/need guild tags that only my guild members can see. The target well nice as a free tag, is hard to see in the mid of battle and you cant see it on the minimap. I could tag up on my actual commander tag, but that then attracts pugs, that while they bring numbers, are not on VoIP and im not typing just for a few people who COULD be using a VoIP service provided for them by the server community, but FREE of charge to them.

As well as, The squad system is complete crap, The markers dont represent things well enough and I dont necessarily need markers, I’d rather have a better system of something along the lines of /classes to see the # of classes currently in my squad so I can then make corrections based on what my group currently needs, /supply for obvious reasons, A better squad chat is also needed >.<

If you give commanders special abilities people will take it and keep their tag on just to min/max their characters. You would see a dozen or more commanders all running together for the group buffs and whatnot.

The system could definitely be improved but that’s not the way to do it, in my opinion.

My thinking behind commander abilities is that they would replace utility slot skills and be purely for support. Possibly skills such as teleport similar to the mesmer skill or AoE bubble shield for the zerg. Either with huge cooldowns in comparison to other classes with similar skills or much reduced active times.

Commanders should be able to offer much more outside of their classes abilities, it should be an upgrade to their support capabilities.

I’d like a special commander class. After 1 char level 80 and a few WvW ranks and a commander book bought and used(all on 1 char) there should be a free char slot unlocked that only can be used with to make a char with such a class. No sPvP, no PvE, no personal story.

Char can only login to Lion’s Arch and not leave LA and from there port to WvW.

This char could use have a free tag, as much WvW ranks as your highest normal player char has for free(automatically updating and not gaining rank itself only taking it from your othe char). And some different ranks that level up while you play that char. only for that char and special skills.

Edit: Class could be heavy since we only have 2 heave armor atm and 3 for each other armor type. And huge AoE buffs with high AoE limit. Would need balancing to prevent enormous stacking with more than 1 commander(and you can’t stop people from using this cause a lot might want to play it then). Maybe weaker effect if others commanders in certain range.

the guild only tag would be soooo easily implemented too, it really cant take much coding work.
instead of “create squad”, make two options “create public squad” + “create guild squad”

I don’t know if anyone else mentioned this idea yet but I think that a lot of zergs are formed from random people following a commander. The ability to have in game voice communication which only the commander could use I think would be really good. The commander would be only heard by people in the squad of course. This kind of feature could also be implemented into normal parties for dungeons and stuff in some way.

does anyone use the current Markers implemented in the game already?

from the wiki
ALT+Mouse1 on the map opens a context menu for adding special order waypoints, to mark locations for attacks, defense, and rally points. These special waypoints are visible to squad members.

I kinda think the first commanders in the game made the tag something to follow and that wasn’t the intent. it’s a COMMANDERS tag not a follow me into battle tag.

a commander looks at maps, studies troop/enemy movement receives reports from the field etc and then designs a plan of attack.

I think it would be great if say there was a room in the citadel that the “Commander” stands in and in that room can receive reports from the field via scouts/current NPC’s

and the commander can view all troop movements on the map, so he can then tell the lieutenant/sergeant where to go what to do etc.

and let’s say a camp needs to be flipped, he places a marker at the camp, the sergeant then gets a small group to go flip it. the commander gets credit for the flip as if he was there and the people flipping it get the reward as usual.

so everyone has a commander tag?, make it a minimum 30 people in a squad before the commander can enter the situations room.

anyways, the commander would need a volunteer to have the follow me tag that people will follow 1 per squad or whatever.

to make this post longer I suggest getting the commander tag back to what a commander means and not a rally point.

They could code in very easily a front loaded tag in the chat box that adds Commander xxxxx: insert commander phrase here.

Ex:

/m player 1: enemy force at loc 1
/t player 2: object A fully upgraded.
/m player 3: inc behind!
/t Commander XXXX:stack on me. Fire fields, blast finishers. Push hard all the way to the back line.
/t player 1: we did it!
/m player 2: upgrading objective B.
/m player 3: scouting location 6
/m worbxhka: cheap-gold! Buy cheap gold! WWW.cjdbsozhd.haxoredypuraccounts.LoL
/m player 4: why do we have so many commanders on the map?
